How to adapt to your flatmate?

How to adapt to your flatmate?

Till now if you have been living alone in the apartment and now are thinking of getting a roommate or a flatmate, it is important that you understand you would have to make some changes. Even though, there is plenty of space for both of you, still you would have to make some changes in order to ensure that you are able to accommodate your flatmate quite easily as well and the flatmate does not feel awkward in deciding with you as well.

1. Privacy:

The 1st thing which you have to understand is that your privacy would be curtailed especially in the common areas of the apartment. You have to behave formally in the common areas of the apartment in order to ensure that your flatmate does not feel awkward as well.

You have to make the flatmate also understand these rules so that the flatmate is able to adapt accordingly as well.

2. Sharing the common areas:

Earlier, when you are living alone in the apartment, you need not share the common areas because they belonged entirely to you but now you need to share the common areas in order to ensure that the flatmate also has equal access to the common areas as well.

This means that sometimes you would have to compromise on the access to the drawing room or to the kitchen as well and you need to be ready for that.

3. Using the utilities responsibly:

Earlier even if you wasted the utilities, you had to pay the entire bill and therefore there was no problem.

In general, you should be careful with the utilities even when you're the only person in the apartment also but when you have a flatmate, you have to even be more careful because you would be sharing the cost of the utilities with the flatmate and therefore, the opinion of the flatmate should not be such that you are constantly wasting the utilities as well and because of that, the flatmate is also required to share half the cost as well.

So, whenever you are starting to live with the flatmate rather than live alone you in your apartment, you would have to make some changes to your behaviour and to your usage of the apartment, which we have highlighted above and if you are able to do that, you would be able to adapt to your flatmate quite easily as well.
